Story

Hi, my name is Ken Drummond and I am currently President of the Rotary Club of Vale of Carron which meets in the Plough Hotel, Stenhousemuir.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

The idea of a cycle challenge round Rotary District 1020 arose two years ago but had to be shelved due to a family illness. Now at 66 years of age I feel the time is right to resurrect that challenge and get it on the road. So I am getting it going now.

I only took up road cycling again three or four years ago after a layoff of 45 – 50 years and found I really enjoy the freedom and exercise I get from it.

However, as a progression on that I wanted to set myself a personal challenge and decided on a long(ish) distance cycle. I then took on board the idea of raising something for charity whilst doing the challenge. As Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland are supporting prostate cancer charities this year I thought I could do the challenge for the benefit of Prostate Cancer UK.

The challenge I have set myself is to cycle the full length of Rotary District 1020 (north to south) and back, visiting various Rotary clubs on the way. As the Rotary Club of Vale of Carron is the most northerly in District 1020 that is very convenient as my starting point. The route would take me from Stenhousemuir to Kirkcudbright and back in 8 cycling days, visiting and joining in the meetings of seven clubs on the way. En route I will be passing through the area of many other clubs as well. It is hoped that, as Prostate Cancer UK is a national charity, I might get help and support from some of the clubs on my route to assist me and to publicise the charity. It is hoped also to raise the awareness of prostate cancer and Rotary. I am also hoping to raise some funds for Prostate Cancer UK.

I am proposing taking the challenge in May 2016 and the planned timetable at present is:

Monday, May 23rd. Stenhousemuir to Dunbar. (Visit Dunbar Rotary)
Tuesday, May 24th. Dunbar to Galashiels. (Visit Galashiels Rotary)
Wednesday, May 25th. Galashiels to Thornhill (Visit Thornhill Rotary)
Thursday, May 26th. Thornhill to Castle Douglas (Visit Castle Douglas Rotary)
Friday, May 27th. Castle Douglas to Dumfries (Visit Dumfries Rotary)
Friday afternoon cycle to Kirkcudbright

Monday, 30th. Kirkcudbright to Lockerbie (Visit Lockerbie Rotary) Tuesday, May 31st. Lockerbie to Innerliethen (Visit Innerleithen, Walkerburn and Traquhair Rotary)

Wednesday, June 1st. Innerleithen to Stenhousemuir (Arrive back for Vale of Carron meeting)

While doing this I will pass through various other club areas e.g. Polmont, Linlithgow, Trannent, Dalbeattie, Peebles etc. But as they will not be meeting at the times I pass I cannot visit. I would, however, welcome any support from them.

The total mileage is approximately 420 miles in the eight days with a total altitude gain of some 25,000 feet..

I am hoping to raise sponsorship from individuals, companies, organisations and obtain assistance with logistics from other Rotary clubs.

I will have a support vehicle and personnel, who will, along with me, have team colours promoting Prostate Cancer UK, Rotary and major sponsors (if any). I would also welcome support from any other Rotarians who might want to meet me along the way and ride a few miles of the route with me.

This is the first outline of my challenge and more detailed information and updates will be posted over the coming days.
