    Story

I have seen all over the news that charities have been suffering due to not being able to fundraise as they normally would. Fundraising events and charity shops haven't been able to open due to lockdowns and social distancing which have reduced the vital income which these charities essentially need to keep operating and supporting the people most in need.

With the money raised it will be divided by three charities which I have chosen to help fill the gap left by the pandemic, to allow essential services and treatment to continue to people who need it most.

That's why I have decided, on Sunday 29th August 2021, I will cycle 135 miles over 9 hours, starting at the King Power Stadium, home of Leicester City Football Club to Villa Park, home of Aston Villa Football Club to St Andrews Stadium, home of Birmingham City Football Club and Coventry City Football Club to The Hawthorns, home of West Bromwich Albion Football Club to the Molineux Stadium, home of Wolverhampton Wanderers to Pride Park, home of Derby County Football Club to The Meadows, home of Nottingham County Football Club to the City Ground, home of Nottingham Forest Football Club then all the way back to where it started, the King Power Stadium.

You can follow my journey and join in any competitions via my Facebook page Sam's Cycle to 135: https://www.facebook.com/cycleto135 .

    THE CHARITIES

    Remarkable Ronnie

Ronnie is remarkable in every sense of the word. He is a determined 2 year old from Rugby who came into the world at 28 weeks. His resilient start took a massive step back when his parents were told that Ronnie had suffered a substantial brain injury and cysts had begun to leave holes in his brain.

Ronnie was diagnosed with bilateral cystic PVL which would evolve into cerebral palsy. To what extent this diagnosis would affect him was a total unknown.

Fast forward and Ronnie is a beautiful smiley little boy. Ronnies CP affects all 4 of his limbs. He also suffers from epilepsy and a cortical visual impairment. Ronnie cannot roll unaided, sit, crawl or walk. Ronnies capacity to speak is affected and he has swallowing difficulties. Ronnie is totally reliant on his parents for everything.

Ronnie has physio and SALT courtesy of our fantastic NHS. Although he tries his best with hours of physio at home, the intervention that Ronnie needs far exceeds what the NHS and his parents can offer in terms of benefit but also in cost. Ronnie has started private movement therapy sessions. The more therapy which can be provided to Ronnie now, the bigger positive impact it will have on his development and independence.

Ronnie is improving lots and he has so much potential it's just a case of unlocking it. Early intervention is key whilst Ronnie is little so that new neuro pathways can be built to learn new skills such as sitting, crawling and potentially walking in the future. As he gets bigger, his body will give up on that potential so therapies now are vital for Ronnie to help live a full life!

How has Remarkable Ronnie been affected by Coronavirus?

The parents and supporters of Remarkable Ronnie have had to think outside the box to continue to raise the vital funds which Ronnie needs to continue his life changing physio therapy, during the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Due to traditional methods of fundraising not being available, such as everyone getting together; they have had to think of more accessible ways to raise the funds, as a result of lockdowns and social distancing. They have done this by looking at a more modern ways, by doing events like a 24 hour game on online streaming.

Although they have found new ways, through this uncertain time, to fundraise, more needs to be done to keep this remarkable young man on the important journey he is on.

    LOROS

LOROS Hospice is a local charity and every year they care for over 2,500 people across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

They deliver free, high-quality, compassionate care and support to terminally ill patients, their family and carers. They deliver care that is special and unique to each individual, such as:

    • Specialised care for those over 18 with complex problems who are suffering from a terminal illness when cure is no longer possible

    • Short-stay inpatient ward for symptom management and/or end of life care

    • Outreach support in the patient’s home - Clinical Nurse Specialist and home visiting service

    • Day therapy.

    • Complementary therapy

    • Counselling

How has LOROS been affected by Coronavirus?

The continued impact of COVID-19 and a third national lockdown is devastating, and LOROS are facing a £2.3 million loss in raised income across this financial year. Once again, they have had to close the doors of our shops and the ability for them to fundraise within their local community continues to be severely affected.

    Alzheimer's Research UK

Without effective treatments, one in three children born today will die with dementia at some point in their lifetime. Today, there are no dementia survivors but research can change this.

Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK's leading dementia research charity, dedicated to causes, diagnosis, prevention, treatment and cure. Backed by their passionate scientists and supporters, they're challenging the way people think about dementia, uniting the big thinkers in the field and funding the innovative science that will deliver a cure.

How has Alzheimer's Research UK been affected by Coronavirus?

The COVID-19 situation is sadly putting dementia research progress at risk, with donations predicted to fall substantially. Alzheimer's Research UK need your support more than ever.

Over the course of the pandemic, and the various national and regional lockdowns and social distancing measures, Alzheimer’s Research UK has been carefully monitoring impact on our fundraising. Their financial year runs through to the end of March, and as a result of the pandemic they are now forecasting a 35% reduction in the total income they had originally planned for this year, and around a 14% reduction in their total income compared to their last financial year.

These forecasted reductions have resulted in them making some difficult decisions around delaying or cancelling planned research programmes and other important charitable activities. However, thanks to the backing of thousands of supporters, fundraisers and partners, they have been able to show some resilience to the situation, safeguard their research portfolio and maintain momentum with crucial studies, activities and services. Given the pandemic has impacted all corners of society, in particular families affected by dementia, they are humbled by people’s generosity and commitment to Alzheimer’s Research UK’s mission this year.
