For those of you that know my family you will be aware that mum was very supportive of me playing Rugby. Having played herself for Lewisham RFC, she moved to Ashford and started to play for Staines LRFC, this is where I reluctantly started my rugby career. As the years passed the team I played with grew in quality, I had the pleasure of being captain of the Staines RFC Development and later 2nd team. Our side nick named the Dirty Ducks, brought in big crowds when we played and mum was always so proud of her boys, threatening anyone who hurt any of them from the sidelines (even when she was confined to her wheelchair).
In 2001 we launched the Cheryl Leach Cup, a charity Rugby day to raise funds and awareness for Motor Neurone Disease. Sadly the cup fell away as the players grew and went their separate ways.
We re launched the cup in 2014 taking on Greenwich RFC, and with the help of the ICE bucket challenges raised just over £3000.
2015 saw the Dirty Ducks come together once again to play against St James, and a further £2000 was raised for MND.
2016 saw the Ducks take on a Staines RFC XV, The Ducks won the match and around £2500 was raised for MND. We even had an ex England international show up to watch.
2017 will see the Dirty Ducks take to the field at The Reeves for the last time, they will face Staines RFC 1st Team for the Cheryl Leach Cup. The match and family fun day will take place on 13th May at Staines RFC who have again kindly let us use the facilities. KO 14:00
