...is the cost of two pulse oximeters!  A couple of years ago when I trained in Newcastle I did a student placement with the medical physiotherapy team at the RVI.  Student placements can be really make or break when you're trying to qualify in a new profession and lots of things influence this - the people you're working with and the experiences they let you have, not just the feedback they give you at the end!  Now I am actually working in the profession I realise how much commitment it is to supervise a student and as this is something teams get no renumeration for I thought it would be nice to give something back to the department.

Following discussions with the senior physio in the department I have been asked to raise money for two (hopefully!) finger pulse oximeters.  These small but expensive gadgets measure patients blood oxygen saturations and heart rate and can be used a lot more easily than the cumbersome obs machines on trolleys we have all seen being dragged about.  We have priced the oximeters and they are £120 each.  The department would be very grateful for one but two would be fantastic according to Karen!  In order to raise these funds I have decided, slightly madly maybe, to attempt the Great South Run at the end of October.  This is a ten mile road race which takes place in Portsmouth so Phil and I will be heading off down there for the weekend, me to torture myself, him to drive me home when I collapse!  Training has been hard work so far but hopefully that will pay off after the event and let's face it, I'm working in the right place to get help if it doesn't!  Thank you very much for all your donations and wish me luck!
