Well where do I start? 

What an unbelievable 24 hrs, including many incredible scenes. The event started at 6pm on Friday evening with Tony and Nigel and others having a practice before the Premier game against Ifton and was finished by so many club members and friends at 6pm Saturday night,  

In very inclement weather ...... 

The Premier team produced a great result beating Ifton 10 – 4, Div 2 playing at home against Horsehay unfortunately losing 4-11. The generosity and support shown by both away teams was outstanding and very welcome. As the games concluded and with the Div 1 side returning victorious after beating Abbey away 12-3, (Thanks Abbey for the donation of sandwiches. Just perfect!).

The top green was packed and at one stage (2:00 am) there were 31 people playing on the green. It was fantastic to see so many people putting themselves out at such an unsociable time and we were all having a great laugh as you can imagine.

Beers supplied by Coors were also going well, weren’t they Sam, Bob and others???

As for Tadge, well what a pub landlord you are, legendry performance, take a bow laddie.

Curry & Naan breads supplied by Dee & Mark hit the spot and it was just what we needed to boost our energy levels. 

This continued until round 3am with the numbers reducing steadily and it was down to the hardcore bowlers, 20 ish (Sorry guys too many to mention, but great effort) superbly led by Ali Cotton, Simon Rhodes, Nigel Evans, Greek, Chopp and many others, to see it through until the morning. Mike & Lynda Potter ran the sound system, which was fantastic and kept the mood flowing brilliantly through the early hours. 

 

Dawn and morning came and so did the sun and on a beautiful summer’s morning the hard core were still at it. Bowls that is! Dedication and commitment personified with nothing else to say.

Tango, Sally, John & Lou Potter were still going for it well past 7am. Sausages and bacon were the order of the day and as you can imagine these went down very well with lots of strong coffee. Many thanks go to Dee for her very kind donation of the food.

There was an early Start for Arthur Palin (6:30am) and Keith Hancox. Many others were fantastic and I guess it must have been the smell of the bacon that brought them in. Great job Mirjana, Mandy and Rose in supplying the famished and keeping us topped up.

With bowlers coming and going through the morning the sun kept trying to shine through the odd shower and with the addition of a few non bowlers it was still a great spectacle

The Saturday league game against Maddocks finally arrived and Robbie started on time at 2pm with the game going on to 3:30pm with a good win for St Georges. Many thanks go to Maddocks BC for their very kind donations.

Well the last 2 hrs:

Games, fun and what a laugh! Everyone there had smiles on their faces and a tired spring in their step for the home stretch.

A last game of spider drew it to a close with the church clock striking 6:00 pm.

 

Tony said a few words on behalf of Mandy, Matthew and the Rhodes family and the superb charity very close to all our hearts. It was then left to me to announce that the early signs are that collectively as a club with support from fellow bowlers, bowling Clubs and leagues, friends and family we all have raised an outstanding      £5982.00.

Not a dry eye in the house.

To all involved throughout the event, whether it be bowling, supporting or fund raising, this has produced some outstanding individual achievements. Donations from around the county, local firms and personal donations were fantastic, so take a bow and rejoice in that as a collective, we have produced an amazing result.

I am proud to say that St George’s is a fantastic club with an incredible group of people, which it is my privilege and honour to know. This makes me a very proud Foz.

Please take a moment to reflect on the fact that a few can influence so many when they have one aim. We know that the money will be well spent by this extremely hard working charity and together as one we have made a difference.

Please dig deep in these hard times it is very much appreciated by the St. George’s BC  and Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research. This site will run for a further 3 months, so if you have not donated and wish to then it is not too late.

 

After having had such an amazing success with our inaugural Bowlathon 2010, we all wanted this fantastic event to continue on a regular basis, so we all agreed that it would be great to support our favorite charity, Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.                                                               

For those that are not aware, the reason for choosing Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research goes back to 2003, when Nicholas Rhodes, the 12 year old son and brother of our members, Amanda and Tony Rhodes and their eldest son Matthew, contracted Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and after a brave fight Nicholas subsequently passed away in the November of that year. The charity is therefore very close to our members hearts, meaning it was an easy decision to choose it once again.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   At the time of Nicholas death, the Club and it’s members raised several thousand pounds for charity in his name. The 2010 Bowlathon event, just like this year’s Bowlathon and our Mixed Doubles competition, played for the first time in 2011, are all in memory of Nicholas and as such all your donations will help us all to keep him in our hearts and memories and hopefully allow us to donate funds to this most worthy of causes. A cause extremely close to the Rhodes family's hearts.                                                                                                                                                      For anyone reading this story, please don’t just donate, although that would be brilliant, please make an effort to come along to the event, from 6pm on Friday 8 June until 6pm Saturday 9 June, even if you have never played bowls before and enjoy the unique atmosphere that is the    St. George’s Bowlathon 2012. 

Lets all get together and smash 2010’s massive total of £6,238.11
