My story

We are all incredibly pleased to tell you that the 24 Hour Squash Marathon for Cancer Research on March 3rd was a resounding success. It is fair to say we have all been bowled over by the support - financially and otherwise - we received on the build-up to and during the challenge itself. We were hugely touched by the number of people who came to support throughout the night, which included scorers (who we cant thank enough for thier concentration and good humour even in the twighlight hours), and supports: both staff, family and students - who made the experience that much easier by bringing music, food, applause and even onesies! Every member of the team worked incredibly hard and we are so happy that you all have seen how important this charity is to so many peoples lives. We can't thank you all enough.

"Having had time to reflect on what we achieved we feel many things, mostly pain, but aside from that we can’t help but feel enormously proud of what we have done, the money we have raised for Cancer Research and the efforts we have dedicated to John Pearson. The pains we suffered throughout the marathon can never come close to the pains suffered by John and his family, and our thoughts are with them. The 24 hours were hugely exciting, and it was an experience we’ll never forget. The support and donations were overwhelming and we can’t thank everyone enough for all their help! We have pledged to be back in 25 years to have another go and see what all the moaning from the oldies was about!" Will and Matt

Overview

On March 3rd (Starting 2pm, ending 2pm on Sunday 4th March), 2 students (Matt Ball and Will Wheeler) and 2 staff (Andrew Lyall and Chris Barton) will take part in a challenging test of agility, stamina and endurence; a 24 hour squash marathon. There will be two players out of the four on court and playing competitive matches at all times for the full 24 hours.

We will be raising funds in aid of Cancer Research UK. John Pearson (Duffus '87), an old boy of Gordonstoun, was sadly diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and is currently being treated with medication developed through Cancer Research. We all wish him the best of luck!

25 years ago, when John was at Gordonstoun, he took part in and successfully completed a similar squash marathon with 2 of the existing participants (Andrew and Chris) - hence the reason we have decided to raise the money in this way. Back then they raised an incredible fund of over £1000 and we hope to achieve over triple that now!

Please help us with this very worthwhile cause to support a member of the Gordonstoun family.

Wish us luck and thankyou very much!

Andrew, Chris, Matt and Will

A personal message

Twenty five years ago I seemed to spend a lot of my time and efforts on a squash court – beating Chris Barton most of the time – so it seemed a good idea to turn my passion and enthusiasm into something that could benefit others. A 24 hour squash marathon was undertaken by myself, John Pearson, Will Hudspith and Chris Barton. It was a long and hard challenge but one that as fit youngsters, we all raised ourselves to the challenge of. Not sure how easy it is going to be 25 years on – especially for the Barton character!

When we did it initially we raised £1300 for Cancer Research and Linnmoor School for Children with Special Needs in Aberdeen. I am delighted that the event is being resurrected after 25 years but even more delighted to be doing something to support an old friend and a cause close to his and many others hearts. Wish us luck and please be as generous as you are able and spread the word! Macduff

"We are so proud to be given the opportunity to do something like this for an OG (and fellow Duffus boy!). Cancer is a terrible disease, which all of us see on the news or in person on almost a day to day basis. Cancer Research seems like an incredible charity that aims to stop this regularity; its motto “Together we will beat cancer” makes us incredibly happy to be part of a life changing organisation that has the attitude that eventually, we will beat it. At Gordonstoun you form special bonds with the friends you make, and I do believe that this is thanks to some of the gruelling challenges we are put through together. Gordonstoun has a knack for pushing you to your limits, but still has you hitting the finish line with a smile on your face. This mentality is exactly the reason we wanted to come to Gordonstoun, and it’s what keeps pushing us today. Thank you." Will and Matt
