charity: water - These people help communities in Africa build fresh water wells and teach them how to keep them up and running. They’re helping from a very basic level and doing fantastic work.

WHY?

The average Brit uses 150 litres of water daily. A three - minute shower can use up to 35 litres. Every time we take a bath, we use about 80 litres of water. We relax in enough water to keep a family of four alive for three days. A hosepipe or lawn sprinkler can use up to 1,000 litres of water in one hour. Survival is possible for 3 weeks without food, but only 3 days without water. Millions of women in developing nations walk 3 miles every day, carrying 40 litres of water. 42,000 people will die this week from diseases related to poor drinking water. 90 percent of them will be children under the age of 5. A child dies from unsafe water every 15 seconds. Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation causes 80 percent of all sickness on the planet and kills 2.2 million people every year. That’s more than all forms of violence, including war. 617 people can be sustained by the amount of water it takes to re?ne one barrel of crude oil. What do these facts mean? These numbers combine to create one enormous problem. Widespread education and awareness are essential for global change, but they are not enough. Action is paramount. Anything you can do is better than nothing. Even the smallest amount of money has an effect when spent wisely in the developing world. This is not about responsibility or guilt, it is not about being rich or poor. It is about love and compassion for your fellow man. It’s about coming together and giving something. Even a little. Start by helping one.

Here is a quote from their website:

Since charity: was founded and began activity in August 2006, we have funded the development of 200+ wells in 6 african nations through the work of exemplary humanitarian organizations like Living Water International, Concern Worldwide US, Healing Hands International, and Water For People. When completed, these wells will serve 100,000 people with clean, safe water.”

On this trip we are hoping to raise enough money to build at least a couple wells in Africa that are on our route so that we can show you back home tangibly what we you have actually been giving towards.
