Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our Help for Heroes JustGiving page.
I'm sure everyone is very aware of the work Help For Heroes do for our injured troops. They are a very worthwhile charity and as long as our forces remain engaged in operations against the Taliban and insurgents overseas their work is only going to get harder.
Currently the charity is trying to raise £20 million to build 7 Recovery Centres around the . The Recovery Centres (RC) will facilitate the swiftest possible return to duty, or smoothest transition to an appropriately skilled and supported civilian life, for seriously wounded, injured, or long-term sick soldiers, irrespective of cause of injury, within a conducive military setting. It will offer soldiers a residential base, ideally close to their parent unit, where together they can convalesce in a structured military environment, benefiting from existing garrison/regional facilities, for example gym/rehabilitation facilities. The RC will also look after the wider management responsibilities such as provision of counselling, career management, resettlement etc. It is not a medical facility, but a personal second-line welfare support capability to both regular soldiers and mobilised reserves, according to their individual need. It will cater for families as they support the patient.
To raise the £20 million needed is a huge effort and we'd like to help in some way if possible.
The Event
The event will take place between 5th and 14th May 2010. The plan is to take on the 3 peaks challenge with a slight difference. The team will start at Snowdon and make the climb, then cycle by road to the Scafell Pike in the and again make the climb, then finally cycle up to the foot of Ben Nevis before climbing to the summit. To make things more interesting the team will complete this challenge on a 100 year old steel framed Quandem (4 seater bicycle). The total route is approximately 500 miles and will require the team to cover between 70-80 miles a day. The route will cover some tough terrain through Snowdonia, the Lakes and the Scottish Highlands. We aim to complete the cycle and peaks in 10 days or less.
The event will not be a relay event. Every member of the team will cover every mile on bike and foot themselves. The only support will be provided by a small van which will carry the teams, camping equipment & spare parts.
Each Member of the team has a personal affiliation with our Armed Forces, either directly as a serving or ex-soldier or through their personal and professional life. Many of the team have seen operational service and know all too well the dangers facing our Armed Forces currently.
Everyone of the team will not only be giving up their time and money but will also undergo an intensive 6 month training regime in order to be fit enough to take on this challenge and we need your support!
We’ve set an ambitious financial target, and we’ll be seeking support from our respective employers and other national businesses to help us reach our target but we need your help as well. Please donate, it doesn’t matter if it’s 50p or £50 every penny will go towards the Recovery Centres.
By donating you will be providing a token of support for the injured soldiers returning from duty abroad with many having to face their rest of their lives in a wheel chair, deaf blind, or learning to live with PTSD. By supporting our event we can demonstrate to them that we have not forgotten them, that we are proud of them and that their transition into a new way of life is just a little bit easier than they feared.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer.
