In late June of 2010 we will be taking on the National Three Peaks Challenge. This involves climbing the three highest peaks, respectively, in Wales, England and Scotland, hopefully within 24 hours. The Peaks are Snowdon (Wales) Scafell Pike (England) and Ben Nevis (Scotland).
We will be doing this to raise money for the MS Society. MS (Multiple Sclerosis) is a chronic condition of the brain and spinal cord characterised by changes in sensation, visual problems, weakness, depression, difficulties with coordination and speech, impaired mobility and disability. Although its cause is not known and a cure has yet to be identified, therapies and medication can be taken to help alleviate the condition.
The MS Society is the UK's largest charity for people affected by MS. The Society funds MS research, runs respite care centres, provides grants (financial assistance), education and training on MS. It produces numerous publications on MS and runs a free phone specialist helpline.
One of our close family members was diagnosed with progressive MS some years ago and the MS Society has been useful for the whole family, giving us support and information on the condition.
Having climbed Snowdon in winter and realising that despite wearing 4 t-shirts, a jumper and pair of jeans, that the weather really is cold and snowy up there we have decided to take this challenge on in summer…maybe even with some of the correct equipment! The challenge will start at the bottom of Ben Nevis and following that climb we will drive to England and climb Scafell Pike, lastly driving to the fantastic country of Wales where we will climb Snowdon, with the aim of completing the descent within a total of 24 hours. This brings not only the challenge of the climbing, but also the traffic from mountain to mountain. The majority of the driving will be done by Steve, our designated driver, and we hope the car is mechanically sound enough to manage the 1181 mile round trip. Should traffic hamper our 24 hour aim we will continue regardless (so we hope you'll still pay up!).
This site is secure and you can select Gift Aid to stop the tax man taking his cut, so please give what you can afford and support the MS Society and two ill-prepared men with no hiking experience (other than the very dangerous Snowdon day) and no map reading or compass skills.
Thanks
Martin and Ben (and driver Steve)
