On 5/6 June 2009 we successfully completed the 3 Peaks Challenge to raise money for the Alzheimers Society and Dacorum Mencap. This page is to donate to Dacorum Mencap.
The challenge was to climb and descend the highest peaks in the Scotland, England and Wales (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon) in 24 hours. This involved 25 miles of walking, 10,000 feet of ascent, over 450 miles of driving between mountains and very little sleep!
If you have already donated thank you so much as you have helped us raise over £4000 for the Alzheimer's Society and Dacorum Mencap. At the time of writing the amounts raised are £2318 for Alzheimer's and £1730 for Dacorum Mencap. If you haven't yet donated it is not too late and all money raised will go the two charities as we paid all costs associated with the challenge ourselves. Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Dacorum Mencap get your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
The challenge was tough and a real team effort with a number of the team having to sacrifice their own climbs to ensure that it was completed in time. During the challenge we faced some extreme weather conditions on all the peaks, road closures and Joe's snoring!
We completed the challenge reaching the top of Snowden in 23 hours 55 mins with three of the team completing all the peaks (Meredith, John and Matt). Everyone that was climbing managed at least one peak. Ailsa, Joe and Suresh (with a calf injury) completed Snowdon, Fred G completed Ben Nevis and Snowdon, and Mark completed Ben Nevis before damaging his knee that ruled him out for the rest of the challenge. Fred H, Ramzi and Suresh did great job with the driving and getting everyone from mountain to mountain despite very little sleep themselves.
