10 September 2010 - Anne Hurrells report as promised
Dear All
On 8th August 2010 the NFU Mutual Properties team completed the National Three Peaks Challenge within 24 hours!!!
The team consisting of Matt Potter, David Hidderley, Ben Truslove, Chris Jones and myself, supported by our driver Phil Pecksen, set out to climb Ben Nevis at 17.00 on Saturday 7th August. It was a fine evening and we had a very enjoyable walk, returning to meet Phil in the carpark and leaving for Wasdale by 21.45.
The overnight drive between Fort William and Wasdale was clear, but unfortunately none of us managed to get any sleep. We set out to climb Scafell Pike at 04.00. It was very dark and we ascended quickly into very low cloud causing some navigational difficulties; this delayed us by over an hour and we thought at this point we had blown our hope of completing within 24 hours.
We were on the road again by 09.00 and thankfully had another clear run to Snowdon arriving just before 13.30. Due to the problems we had on Scafell Pike, this meant that we only had 3 hours 30 minutes to complete Snowdon (normal allowance is 4 hours). I think adrenaline had taken over by this point as we legged it up and down Snowdon enabling all team members to finish by 17.00 and within the 24 hours!
~~~~UPDATE~~~~~ 9th August
We did it ! All team members finishing under 24 hrs. Report to follow. Big thanks for your kind donation
As you read this page I ask you the question…. Have you ever made a professional mistake you came to regret?!
After a few Friday drinks an idea was formed…."The 3 Peaks Challenge"! I genuinely believe that all five members of the property team hoped that each other would forget - but come Monday - no one did, and to make matters worse … no one backed down!
And so a fellowship was formed with a Welshman, a rambler, a rugby player, A DJ, a master of the BBQ and someone who thinks he is a bit of a 'dealmaker' - all from the property team at NFU Mutual.
The task is far from simple with the challenge to hike:-
Ben Nevis (1320m climb) 5 hrs walking
Scafell Pike (900m climb) 4hrs walking
Snowdon (720m climb) 4hrs walking
Total climb of 2,940 metres
The team have not made it easy for themselves as they will navigate, drive and camp without the help of any organisation in view of keeping the money that you kindly donate, to go direct to the charity.
And the biggest challenge is of course … under 24 hours!
On a serious note, training for the event has been truly fantastic. What makes it more enjoyable is the knowledge of the good work achieved by the charity that we seek to raise money for – Make a Wish
Make-A-Wish Foundation® UK aims to grant magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening illnesses. A wish granted is truly magical and provides memories that last a lifetime.
There are 20,000 children and young people living in the UK with a life-threatening illness. Over 1,000 will turn to Make a Wish for that special life moment.
The Team taking part in the event consists of:-
Anne Hurrell - Captain
David Hidderley
Matthew Potter (The Waterboy )
Ben Truslove
Chris Jones
Philip Peckson (Drives)
So what can you do? - We'd like you to make all our pain turn to gain for this charity and help us grant a magical wish to a child who needs all our help. Please sponsor us by visiting this page and signing over some of your hard-earned cash to help those with so much less than you. The team would like to send their sincere thanks to you for visiting this page and to thank you for every penny given.
It’s a great cause!
