In 2002, I found out that I had terminal prostate cancer. The doctor who diagnosed me told me that there wasn't much he could do for me and that I would have around two years left to live - possibly less.

As you can imagine, this was fairly shocking to me - not least because, at the time, I was only 37 with a beautiful wife and two young daughters.

I've been lucky. Support from family, friends and colleagues has enabled me to have experimental chemotherapy in London and experimental radiotherapy in New York.

The treatment has been successful in the sense that the amount of cancer in my body is now incredibly low. Unfortunately, that will not last as the effects of the treatment are not permanent.

My doctors think that I've got around six months left before the cancer will kill me. I've decided to try and stretch that period as far as possible by being positive and giving myself goals to aim for - things to stay alive for, if you like. At the same time, I think it's vital for people like me to raise as much money as possible for organisations like the Prostate Cancer Charity. Prostate cancer isn't as well supported as, say, breast cancer - possibly because it's thought to only affect old men. My case, and an increasing incidence of the disease in young men, shows that that is not true. There is a need for men of all ages to have access to well funded sources of information on the disease and help in coping with a diagnosis of prostate cancer. Treatment options in the UK need to be as advanced as those available in the US. To that end, I have asked my close friends to join me in riding the forty-two mile Five Boroughs Bike Ride in New York City on 1 May, 2005. Our group of around thirty riders aim to raise £200,000 for the Prostate Cancer Charity. Please help us to give all men a fighting chance when they contract this awful disease. David Hillier.
