<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Our rainforests face catastrophic threats through illegal logging, palm oil plantations, and deforestation for growing populations. Unless we do something, these magnificent habitats will be lost in the next generation with terrible consequences both for our climate as well as for tens of thousands of endangered species and equally threatened indigenous peoples and their languages/ cultural knowledge. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">The AWF’s plant a rainforest programme will help reverse this process, children within local communities around the world are working in collaboration with children in the west to grow trees from seedlings and replant the whole forest, within their life times they will see huge differences through the habitats they would have helped to create.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">The cost of planting a tree in the third world is 100<sup>th</sup> of the cost of planting a tree in the UK. Therefore £10 raised in the UK may buy one oak tree, invested in a country such as Sierra Leone this could buy 100 endangered trees, and the children of Sierra Leone will collaborate with the children in the UK to make this dream a reality.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">As part of Climate Week 2011, the AWF has committed to put in place programmes to plant one million trees this year (tree planting in Sierrra Leone,for example is planned for June, just prior to the rains). We are working on the following projects:</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Calibri;">A. </span><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Sierra Leone. In collaboration with SLCS and their Nature Clubs</span></span><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> throughout the country we will be planting trees to replenish the critically threatened Upper Guinea Lowland Forest habitats as well as such as Acacia trees as a source of fuel. We will also be planting in wetland and mangrove habitats.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">B. Bolivia. In the Mididi Forest reserve, set in the Amazon Rainforest.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">C. In Vietnam, with the Hill Tribes and with re forestation programmes still wourking to counter the impacts of Agent Orange.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">D. The Gambia, as part of local community projects</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">E. In Sri Lanka, to help create nature corridors and re build the ancient rainforest habitats of which only 2% remain.</span></span></p>
