We are fundraising for Action Duchenne, and are seeking donations to help us achieve or goal of completing Bristol to Birmingham (B2B) together in our powerchairs and raise £1million in the process.

This event is a huge undertaking for us, and as far as we are aware this will be the first time anyone with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy has undertaken this challenge. For us to complete this challenge will be an amazing achievement, and a huge inspiration to the Duchenne community.

Action Duchenne is the UK charity dedicated to finding a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy while improving the lives of everyone affected by the condition. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is the most common fatal genetic disorder diagnosed in childhood, affecting around 2500 people in the UK.

Duchenne results in progressive loss of strength and is caused by a mutation in the gene that encodes for dystrophin. Because dystrophin is absent, the muscle cells are easily damaged. The progressive muscle weakness leads to serious medical problems, particularly issues relating to the heart and lungs. Young men with Duchenne typically live into their late twenties. Life expectancy is improving as standards of care and knowledge about Duchenne increases , and some men now live into their 30’s and 40’s.

The money raised by us will help support the work of Action Duchenne, and will specifically be used to fund research that could help older people with Duchenne who are no longer able to walk. This is a new, exciting and currently hugely unexplored area of Duchenne research, our fundraising will allow serious research in this area to begin.
