Aberdeen SANDS (Stillbirth& Neonatal Death Charity) is a local charity who provide support to bereaved families following the loss of their baby. The group is run by a committee of bereaved parents and are funded through fundraising and donations.   

We provide many items to the Babyloss ward unit in Aberdeen Maternity Hospital such as memory boxes, baby clothes, toiletries, phone cards, camera etc and have recently funded the refurbishment of the Baby Room. We also fund bereavement training days for midwifes and other healthcare professionals. 

We have just launched a fundraising campaign to raise approx. £142,000 for a designated Bereavement Suite at the New Baird Family Hospital, which is due to open in 2021. This will be a private area where woman can deliver their stillborn babies and will consist of 2 en-suite rooms, a family room and a multi-purpose room. The money raised will pay for decor, furnishings, non medical equipment and supplies for the bereavement suite. 

All funds raised will de designated for the purpose of the Baird Family Hospital Bereavement Suite. Given that we are still in the planning stage we don't yet have an absolute figure on how much the work will cost. Any excess funds raised will be spent where the need is greatest, helping Sands in Scotland deliver its services: to support anyone affected by the loss of a baby, to improve the bereavement care received by parents and families and to promote research to reduce the number of babies dying.
