My story

On 4th August 2006 I was involved in a serious accident, and I suffered a very severe brain injury, resulting in 4 separate brain haemorrhages, on my right temple lobe, frontal lobe, left temple lobe and left parietal lobe, together with considerable swelling of the brain. I also had a blood clot on my right temple lobe and a DVT (blood clot) in my jugular, together with fractured skull, clavicle, jaw, cheekbone, 4 ribs, foot et al. Doctors considered the extent of brain injury likely to be too severe for me to survive.

I was in coma on life support for 3 weeks, the first 11 days of which I was critical, I spent 4 weeks in intensive Care and a total of some 7.5 weeks in various neurosurgical wards despite my Steve Mcqueen type "Great Escapes" . The furthest I ever got on my numerous escape attempts being to succeed in dragging myself (paralysed down left hand side at the time) with my IV pole and other odds and sods whilst dressed in surgical gown as far as the lifts.

Even when it became apparent that I was going to survive, the likelihood was that I would have some left side paralysis and could be wheel chair bound and requiring full time care.

I have been one of the few very lucky ones following a very severe brain injury and have done exceptionally well and with that in mind, and whilst having entered some time ago, I finally decided last week that I would complete in this years championships with a view to trying to put something back and raise money for Neurocare, a registered Charity in Sheffield.

Sheffield is on the world map as a pioneering brain surgery centre and over the years has pushed the boundaries of neuroscience; the Charitable organisation funding the purchase of the UK's first 3 Sonowand systems, the UK's first intraoperative live 3D brain scanner in the Neurosurgical unit in Sheffield. This has led to systems having being provided to neurosurgical units in London and Birmingham and are currently being considered for Edinburgh and Newcastle.

Donations are used for equipment, funding research (neurocare is trying to fund equipment to find a cure for neurological diseases, Motor Neurone, Parkinson's, Azheimer's etc and this machine will be the first machine of its kind in the UK used to investigate neurological disease) and to development of neurosciences in surgery, neurology, neuro-physiology, neuro-radiology. Neurocare aims to provide equipment which would not otherwise be provided by the NHS
