I want to raise money for the young men and women from the hostels funded by the Karuna Trust in India. Their social welfare grants stop after 10th standard exams but they need to complete two more years of school in order to qualify for higher education. Their lives are difficult because, without education, young women's families will try to find husbands for them by age 16. And for young men with little education, life in a poor Indian village offers very little opportunity indeed.
Donating money for these young people will help us to pay for school books and uniforms as well as the cost of extra tuition and personality development which is needed because the standard of teaching in government schools is often very low. When these essentials are in place, the young people demonstrate their ability to become community leaders, often returning to the hostels to inspire the younger students.
Thank you for celebrating my birthday in this very helpful way. You are facilitating a young person to develop their individual potential while indirectly supporting Indian communities who still suffer deprivation and discrimination.
