As some of you will know, May 2010 sees me attempt to Elbrus in . Elbrus rises 18,500 ft above sea level in the mountain range on the border of and and is ’s highest mountain.
In doing so I will be raising funds for the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust – a charity with close links to my veterinary practice (The Arundel Equine Hospital) and with whom a number of colleagues have been and continue to be directly involved with.
The trust was established to reduce rural poverty by increasing productivity of working horses and donkeys through animal welfare and owner education. The is one of the smallest and poorest countries in with a population of 1.5 million, most of whom are peasant farmers.
About thirty years ago horses and donkeys were introduced into the country for use as working animals and their numbers have increased considerably in the last ten years or so. Many of the 27,500 horses and 40,000 donkeys suffer poor treatment and conditions simply through their 'carers' lack of knowledge.
Inadequate food is also a problem and these factors lead to distressing sights, aggravating problems with parasites, infection, lameness and disease. Ill fitting or inappropriate harness and little or no knowledge of farriery often compounds problems. Thanks to generous contributions, the trust is starting to alleviate many of the problems.
Your support of even a small donation can make a huge difference to these guys and all help is welcome! Secure and quick donations can be made at www.justgiving.com/Alex-Clarke going immediately and directly to the trust itself. More information on the trust’s work can be found at www.gambiahorseanddonkey.org.uk.
