"And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time...". So proclaimed warm weather philanthropist and notorious soap dodger Bob Geldof in the 1984 festive smash "Do They Know It's Christmas?".

Of course, at the top of Mount Kenya (which is pretty much the highest mountain in Africa), it can snow at any time of year, a caveat that Geldof singularly fails to mention - perhaps because it doesn't quite fit in with his blinkered view of the continent.

Fortunately, when ChildHope approached me about climbing Mount Kenya in order to raise money for vulnerable and disadvantaged children worldwide, I was under no such illusions about the scale of the dangers which would lie in wait. Perils which include frostbite, altitude sickness, insurgents, counter-insurgents, lions, leopards, bellicose giraffes and, most chillingly of all, the dreaded Kenyan rock hyrax. Known by natives as "ooh-kan-ku-za" or piranha of the land, these apex predators have been known to strip a whole buffalo to the bone in less than a minute - and then eat the marrow.

It is a grave situation, exacerbated further by the fact that all of these challenges must be met accompanied by no more than two guides to each office worker. In short, I take my life into my own hands, so please give generously. It is for an excellent cause.
