As some of you already know I am off to Borneo at the end of September to volunteer for two months at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabiltation Centre.
In brief, the Rehabiltation Centre rescues abandoned, injured or orphaned Orangutans, and teaches them how to fend for themselves and survive in the wild.
Whilst in Borneo, I will be climbing Mount Kinabalu to raise money for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The WWF addresses global threats to people and nature such as climate change, the peril to endangered species and habitats, and the unsustainable consumption of the world’s natural resources. They do this by influencing how governments, businesses and people think, learn and act in relation to the world around us, and by working with local communities to improve their livelihoods and the environment upon which we all depend.
I am particularly passionate about the threat the Palm Oil industry has on the rainforest and the habitat in which Orangutans live. I hope my time volunteering at Sepilok and taking part in a sponsored climb will help contribute to this worthy cause.
Mount Kinabalu is the highest mountain in South East Asia, with its summit reaching 4095 metres (by way of an interesting statistic, the journey up and down Mount Kinabalu is the same as climbing one way up Everest). The climb will take 3 days and 2 nights in total. I am really nervous about the last stretch of the climb as we have to leave at 3am and trek in the dark in order to get to the summit by sunrise. However I am training hard in preparation and know the views at the the summit will make it all worthwhile.
Please support me in this challenge and in raising money for this worthy cause.
