Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On the 3rd April 2010 I embark on the biggest challenge of my life as I take part in the Marathon Des Sables.
The Marathon des Sables (MDS) (Marathon of the Sands) is a six-day, 254 km (156 mile) ultramarathon, which is the equivalent to six regular marathons. The longest single stage is 91 km (55 miles) long.
This multiday race is held every year in the southern Moroccan desert. It is considered the toughest foot race on Earth. The first event of the Marathon started in 1986 and each year has approx 800 competitors from all around the world. In temperatures that regularly exceed 100 degrees F, over rough terrain (including 30 miles of sand dunes) competitors not only battle physical but mental fatigue. This is made even more difficult in that you carry all your requirements for the weeks challenge including food in your back pack. I have decided to raise money for two Charities -
Make-A-Wish Foundation grants magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening illnesses. Since being established in the UK in 1986, they have granted over 5,700 wishes.
There are 20,000 children and young people living inthe UK with a life-threatening illness. In 2010, around 1,000 children will turn to foundation to have their special wish granted. The foundation want to grant a magical wish to every one of these...and more!. Make-A-Wish needs to raise £5 million in 2010 to achieve this.
All the money raised by me will be used to help children in Scotland.
