Story

I have created this page to raise funds for a charity that I am volunteering with called The Bulgarian Abandoned Childrens Trust (TBACT).

TBACT is a British charity dedicated to helping disadvantaged and disabled children in care institutions in Bulgaria (www.tbact.org). Their volunteer programme is based in a children's orphanage in Pleven, Bulgaria that is home to over 300 babies and young children. The circumstances of the orphanages in Bulgaria and funding restrictions mean that the children rarely leave their cots, and if they do they are left for hours in playrooms with very little toys or stimulation. Rocking and head banging is common behaviour for almost every child. For each 2.6 months in an institution, it is estimated that a child loses 1 month in both physical and mental development. For this reason, a child of 15 may be the size of a 6 or 7 year old.

I was inspired to volunteer for TBACT after watching a harrowing BBC documentary– aired in 2007, called “Bulgaria’s Abandoned Children” (there is a video link on this page). The documentary revealed the horrific mistreatment of children in a care institution in Mogilino, Bulgaria. Thankfully the institution was closed in 2009 and most of the children in the film have since been moved to care homes with better facilities. Charities like TBACT endeavour to close more institutions in Bulgaria as they remain a huge problem in the country. Until then, volunteers can spend from two weeks to six months at a time in the orphanage nurturing and stimulating the children with activities to develop their mental and physical wellbeing. The volunteer programme provides the children with some much needed attention and the freedom to play and have fun. Most of the children in the orphanage have never been outside and have not seen their reflection, something that we all take for granted.

In February 2012 I will be going to the Pleven Orphanage for two weeks with 3 other volunteers. A testimony by Melora Johnson documents her experience and provides an insight into what I will see (http://www.helpinghandbags.co.uk/Helping_Handbags/The_Impact.html).

I have set up a JustGiving page where people can donate and the money raised will go to TBACT. Additionally I would like to take much needed supplies of baby grows, nappies, Sudocrem and toys for the children, so if you can spare any of these please contact me by email at amanda_bulgaria@hotmail.co.uk to arrange collection (if within Edinburgh).

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Any donations would be hugely appreciated and will really make a difference to a child’s life.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my page J
