Story

Those of you that have known me for a while will know that I used to dread athletics at school. I would try and avoid doing the 1500m at school at any cost!

                                           ----

So why is Ana now doing a 10K run of all things?

In my first year of university, a few members of our JCR committee wanted to run the Bupa Manchester 10K for Diabetes UK & The British Heart Foundation. As the elected charity officer....my heart sank but ended up signing up for the run along with 3 other athletic members of the committee.

On the day of the race, I wanted to back out.

But I didn't and managed to run the whole race in just over an hour and 10 minutes. For someone who used to shy away from any type of race at school, volunteering to run for 10 kilometres straight & complete it, was surprising.

That was the furthest I'd ever run before, without stopping and although tough, I wanted to prove a point to myself, and others.

You don't need to have been amazing at sports throughout school to be able to run and make a difference.

                                            ----

This year, I'd like to run the Richmond Park's 10K race on the 6th July 2013 in less time and raise money for the Rotary Club of Guildford's Eye Project.

                                           ----

The Guildford Rotary Eye Project aims to prevent and cure avoidable blindness across the world. The charity was founded in 1998 by a Rotarian & Guildford consultant ophthalmic surgeon with a vision for restoring the sight of 1 million people.

Originally, the Guildford Rotary Eye Project focused on Kolkata, in West Bengal in India, providing training for eye surgeons, equipment, buses to transport patients to and from hospitals to their rural villages and mobile eye screening camps amongst other facilities.

Today, the Rotary Club of Guildford Eye Project carries out more than 40,000 operations per year in the Indian sub-continent, Africa and other developing countries.

Most of us take our eye sight for granted

A donation of £5 has the ability to restore a person's vision and change their life.
