Our story.

Towards the end of 2009 and early in 2010, my wife Leslie (who was 50) was being treated for symptoms of the menopause.

During this time, Leslie kept asking whether there could be any other cause for the continued heavy bleeding. Due to her age and existing conditions of polycystic ovarian syndrome and fibroids, the doctor's insisted it could only be the menopause.

Leslie was not convinced and kept raising her concerns until one evening after a particularly bad bleed during a possible period, she expelled a piece of tissue that was not normal. Leslie took that piece of tissue to her GP for analysis.

Later that same night, an even bigger piece of tissue was expelled and it was decided to call the out of hours service, who then sent her to the hospital at . A biopsy was taken the next day and Leslie was sent home.

At the end of March 2010 Leslie was diagnosed with stage 1 cancer of the endometrium (adenocarcinoma).

The operation on 19 May 2010 at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary involved a full pelvic clearance and histology showed there to also be a focal point outside the uterus on an ovary. For this reason, the diagnosis was elevated to Stage 3 cancer and therefore Leslie will be undergoing 6 cycles of chemotherapy starting on .

This is where you and I come in.

As you will see from the photograph, I have long purple hair. It is even longer now since the photograph taken at our Handfasting in August last year.

To show my support for Leslie and to raise awareness of this and other cancers, I am having my head shaved when Leslie's hair falls out, and unfortunately it will.

So, i am looking to raise as much money as possible for the MacMillan Nurses.

We shall be hoping to get newspapers involved and TV so that the exposure is as wide and high as possible.

Please give what you can, we have to find ways of empowering people to listen to their bodies and to question authority when it comes to their lives.

You, yes you reading this, have to take some responsibility for your health since statistics show that 1 in 4 people will have some form of cancer in their lifetime.

It need not take their lives and by understanding your body, you can save your own life or that of your loved ones by being pro-active. This means men and women, all of us.

So, come on join me in raising money for Macmillan and kick cancer into touch.

Thank You.

Andrew Marsh.
