Once again I am joining a group of ISPP (International School Phnom Penh) teachers setting off to spend a sweaty, exhausting weekend in February building houses for the impoverished, rural people of Cambodia.
The house building project is one of several projects run by an NGO called Tabitha which was established by Janne Ritskes, over 10 years ago. An organization that helps the poorest of the poor, Tabitha has lifted hundreds of thousands out of poverty through community-oriented initiatives that empower struggling Cambodians to create healthy, viable, and self-sustainable communities.
The Cambodians who will receive the houses have saved over several years to put together some money ($30 – not much to us but a huge sum for them) towards the cost of their house. We put up the rest of the money ($1000 USD for one house) needed to buy the materials and resources to build the houses. And we do the building a hot, sweaty exhausting couple of days, but so rewarding.
My aim is to raise at least the $1000 for one house. Our team of teachers is aiming to build 12 houses.
Any donation, however small, will be really gratefully received. Thank you so much.
