Who
Nathan Fleming (34) from Basingstoke Hampshire has set himself a number of challenges to raise £10,000 for Asthma UK as his son Brandon suffers from extremely severe and life-threatening asthma.
What
Before this Nathan had never run a marathon or climbed a mountain but his challenges include:
* London Marathon 17 April 2011
* UK Three peaks challenge 22 April 2011
* 300ft Bungee jump (Date to be confirmed)
Unfortunatly Brandon being hospitalised at the end of 2010 and the subsequent tempoary stopping of his sub cut treatment has affected the schedule of challenges but we have some big challenge ideas for the future so stay tuned.
Past events
* Great South Run 24 October 2010
* Kilimanjaro Climb 8 October - 19 October 2010
* Sky Dive 18 July 2010
* London Marathon 25 April 2010
* Newham London Run (10K) 07 March 2010
* Silverstone Half Marathon 14 March 2010
Why
Personally I do not have asthma, but my 11yr old stepson Brandon has brittle asthma.
Brandon does not just suffer from asthma, he cannot control it, it really does control his and all our lives, From an early age it was seen that his life would mean many frequent emergency hospital stays, which always include the use of intravenous drugs, high dose oxygen, nebulisers and steroids.
Brandon’s asthma has been so severe for so long that since the age of 4 he has used oxygen at home, nebulisers and daily inhaled and oral steroids. The drugs although good have given Brandon diabetes and thinning of the bones.
Brandon is under the care of both the North Hampshire hospital and also Professor Bush at the Royal Brompton hospital. Brandon has recently started a new treatment called SubCut Bricanyl which feeds a continuous infusion of Bricanyl (Terbutaline) into a sofset into his tummy this has so far given Brandon a much better general quality of life however 5 weeks on and we have already seen 1 admission to hospital.
For a short video of the treatment click here
All Brandon wants to do is play football and run about, he has yet to live like a ‘normal’ child, he doesn’t know what it’s like to breath properly and feel well.
Brandon will never be able to run a marathon, but he has such determination that he would if he could, so instead I am doing it for him.
Asthma is nasty; imagine not being able to breath and fearing that the next attack could be your last.
On average, 4 people per day that’s, 1 person every 6 hours dies from asthma.
I have a site for my training progress and extra information about asthma can be found on my blog site
