I am raising funds to help Isha Vidhya (UK) build an Isha Vidhya school in the village of
Vanavasi, near Mettur in India.
Isha Vidhya is a project founded by the Isha Foundation, run entirely by volunteers, that
aims to build 206 schools in Tamil Nadu, to educate a large number of India’s rural
underprivileged and disadvantaged child population.
Vanavasi, is predominantly a textile town, where children go to work at looms to earn an
income, rather than school to be educated. The area also has a number of large power
plants and factories including steel rolling mills. With a large labour population, children in
the area would greatly benefit from an Isha Vidhya school and education. Providing them
with an opportunity to become a valued member of a large workforce, and local economy
and community.
The school will have the capacity to educate 1200 children in nearby villages. Standard
classrooms teaching subjects such as mathematics and English, are accompanied by
specialist classrooms to teach a multitude of subjects including botany, zoology, biology,
chemistry, computer skills.
With teaching methods that adopt a holistic approach to education, children are nurtured
at all levels of their being; mental, physical and emotional. A nutritious supplement is
provided each school day to all students, and transportation is also supplied in some
areas, to deliver children to and from school.
