The Bar-hamas is an event we are holding in order to raise money and awareness for Tourism concern. The event is been organised as part of our event management degree at University College Birmingham. The event will take place at BarOne in Birmingham on Friday 14 May 2010; it will be a holiday themed evening with many fundraising activities and competitions taking place throughout the night.
Tourism Concern fights exploitation in tourism. They are an independent, non-industry based, UK charity. They are the only organisation in Europe actively campaigning on tourism and human rights. Their vision is for a world free from exploitation in which all parties involved in tourism benefit equitably and in which relationships between industry, tourists and host communities are based on trust and respect.
When you book a holiday do you ever take the time to consider if your tourism is actually benefiting the local people?
There are poor working conditions in tourist areas all over the world; even in countries you may be visiting this year! Some of the many countries with cases of worker exploitation are Burma, China, Caribbean, Egypt, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Peru, Spain, South Africa, Tanzania and Thailand. Other issues Tourism Concern campaign against are community displacement, environmental damage, and exploitation of women working in the tourism industry.
Tourism Concern campaign to safe guard the people that make our holidays enjoyable; they need as much support as possible in order to give local people a fairer deal from tourism.
Past campaigns have led to positive change and meaningful solutions. All the UK’s leading tour operators have now adopted Tourism Concerns policies on labour conditions for hotels and improved working conditions for mountain porters. Tourism concern also publish travel guide helping tourists to maximise benefits to local communities; they also publish educational books that are used in many schools and universities across the UK.
