Barnaby John (‘’Barney’’) Gibbens OBE (17 April 1935 – 3 June 2012) dearly beloved by Tina, his children, family and friends was a man who achieved so much and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

START is Tina's chosen charity after much consideration. START (Skin Treatment & Research Trust) supports research into the skin diseases that affect conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and malignant melanoma. www.start-skin.org and it helped Barney so much when he himself later suffered from a skin disorder. He was Chairman of START from1990-2008.

Barney, a chartered accountant, was one of the most significant founding fathers of the UK IT Services industry. Barney co-founded CAP20 in 1962; one of the very first IT services companies in the UK. It started with some 10 employees all of whom gained entry into MENSA. When Barney asked for a group discount and MENSA said no, he replied, “There will never be a computer clever enough to resign from MENSA.”

After a merger in 1988 it became Sema where Barney served as Chairman until stepping down in 1991. Barney was President of the CSA in 1975 (now Intellect) and in 1987 was the founding Master of the Information Technologists' Company (ITC) as well as a host of other public bodies including President of the UK Computing Services Association (1975), Chairman of the UK Computing Services Industry Training Council (1984–94) and IT Industry Lead Body (1987–94), Director of the UK National Computing Centre (1987–90) and a member of the UK National Council for Vocational Qualifications (1989–92).

Barney was elected a Fellow of the British Computer Society (FBCS) in 1970, a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (FCA) in 1972 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) in 1993 He was awarded an OBE in 1989 and henceforth known as ‘’Lord Sharp of Cables’’!
