Dr Graeme McDonald passed away in November 2010.

Among his major achievements he was particularly proud of the development in Malawi of the Vwira Mental Health Project which is led by the Northern Ireland Association for Mental Health (of which Graeme was chair) in partnership with local Presbyerian and Catholic church groups.

The project employs two nurses who work with the severely mentally ill. The nurses link closely with village head men and traditional healers and, against a background in which those with severe mental illness have often been ignored and at times even mistreated, they make a real difference to the lives of highly disadvantaged people.
