******Thanks for all the support and donations so far. It helped get me round the race on Saturday 4th September!******
This September I'm taking part in the Vitruvian half-ironman triathlon at Rutland Water. The race involves a 1.9km swim, 85km bike and 21km run. Yup - that's the equivalent of swimming along the Thames from St. Paul's to the London Eye, cycling from there to Brighton and then running a half marathon. I expect it to take me around 6 hours, i.e. nearly a full working day. It's a pretty big challenge, especially for someone from an 'only-run-when-chased' athletic background.
I'm using the race as an opportunity to raise money for Magic Breakfast, a charity that supplies breakfast to underprivileged young children who would otherwise start their school day too hungry to learn. It's a small charity and the money I raise will directly benefit those in need, rather than paying for company overhead or salaries. In fact, if I manage to hit my goal of £2000 then I get to sponsor a breakfast club in a local primary school for a year. That seems a pretty good outcome for all the training I've put in over the past six months.
I train on average 12 hours a week, including regularly getting up before 6am to swim, cycle and run. So far this year I've cycled 1000 miles, run 300 miles and swum 100 miles in training. It'd be great if all that effort goes towards more than just getting me across the finish line in September and helps a group of children start their day, and their education, on the right foot.
