Dear All,

I have been inspired by Dish Marathon-ing and Russ Triathalon-ing for charity.

I've decided to do something excessive enough to inspire you all to cough up for an excellent cause.  I'm raising money for The Nepali Children's Trust (NCT), a Bristol based charity that my Mum and Dad support.

The NCT supports physically challenged children living at the Disabled Newlife Centre (DNC) in Kathmandu. The DNC provides long term, sustainable support and is helping to build a new purpose built residential home for the children.  Go to the website

http://www.nepalichildrenstrust.com/whowesupport.htm

and read about what the DNC does; more importantly, you can read about each of the children who are there now or who have already left having been successfully cared for.  It really makes a difference seeing pictures of the kids whose lives your money will improve.

Unsurprisingly I decided against training for months to properly prepare myself and then taking hours undergoing grueling physical exertion; instead, after a couple of hours of preparation on the day, I’m going to walk 18 feet.  Yes – 216 whole inches.  However… just to make it a bit of a challenge, I’ll be sans socks and shoes and red-hot coals will be under-foot.  I will be FIREWALKING, like a bushman of the Kalahari or an India Hindu mystic.  I’m no faker [sic] and I will be doing this for real.

I’m guessing the coals will be above barbecue temperature after 2 hours of preparation (eeek… I just read on Wikipedia that it will be at least 1000 degrees Farhenheit), so you might assume I’ll be moving with some alacrity.  However, I assure you I will endeavor to move as languidly as ever – my inner sloth will prevail.  Also, with slow, tranquil, considered movements there is far less chance of my tripping over a coal, falling flat on my face, setting my barnet on fire and ending up as a human torch.

So whilst others risk mere exhaustion, I’m risking the loss of my strength-giving-hair and becoming Ben Flambé.  This firewalking escapade will be happening next Saturday (2 October) so time is short.  (unsurprisingly given I’m involved).

I’d like to raise a few hundred pounds by then so please donate AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.  Not too much – it’s only 18 feet not a marathon that I’m doing – but enough to help these children please.  Any donation will help alleviate the brutally unfair hand they have been dealt and give them a better chance to achieve their potential.  You can help each of them.

As a further fillip for you all, if the total goes past £300 I’ll walk it twice, past £500 thrice and if you all raise £1000 I’ll do it a fourth time naked covered in goose fat for a roast potato crisp finish (luckily this happens at night so any spectators won’t be too traumatised).
