For the second year running, I have been persuaded that I should do a mountain challenge not only for my health but also for the greater benefit of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.  I have decided therefore to move north from Ben Vorlich and climb the most northerly of the Munros, Ben Hope, assisted by a few family members.

Ben Hope stands in splendid isolation, well apart from other hills in a very depopulated area of the country which carries the legacy of the Highland Clearances.  This then means a long drive north with an overnight stay near Bonar Bridge.  For those who are interested, the mountain was named by the Vikings, for whom its conical shape was a navigational aid and Ben Hope means ‘Hill of the Bay’.   Apparently when viewed from the north end of Loch Hope, the hill’s appearance is very symmetrical although I gather from recent surveys finding the exact starting off point may turn out to be harder than the actual climb itself.  Hopeful;ly the Sat Nav works and we find the starting point !! We shall see!

I would appreciate and more importantly, the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, would greatly appreciate any contributions you may wish to offer financially.
