My story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

We are looking to raise money to thank the various hospital units who assisted us in the birth of our son Daniel.

Prior to Katherine becoming pregnant with our second child (after our first, Rebecca) we knew there was a strong likelihood that we would suffer from rhesus disease. Rhesus disease is a condition where antibodies in a pregnant woman’s blood destroy her baby's blood cells. As we thought, during the pregnancy, the baby’s haemoglobin levels dropped and from 24 weeks, we began to travel to the Fetal Medicine Unit at the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow for baby to receive blood transfusions within the womb. This happened 5 times, at fortnightly periods. The staff at the Southern General were fantastic and made a complex procedure seem very straight forward.

Our beautiful son, Daniel was born at 34 weeks and spent his first 15 days in the Neonatal Unit at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital. The care and dedication of all the staff there made it easier to cope with this very difficult and anxious time.

Daniel has since required 3 further blood transfusions since his birth at Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital. Again the staff have been great, ensuring that Daniel has been well looked after as have we.

Katherine and I intend on running the Baker Hughes 10k run on Sunday 20 May 2012, with the aim of raising money for the Fetal Medicine Unit, Friends of the Special Nursery – Aberdeen Maternity Hospital and the ARCHIE Foundation as our way of saying thanks to each department who have cared for Daniel in his short life so far.

We are working in association with the Diced Cap charity but all money raised will be going to the Fetal Medicine Unit, Friends of the Special Nursery – Aberdeen Maternity Hospital and the ARCHIE Foundation equally.

Many thanks for looking and any donations are gratefully received.
