The objective of the appeal

 

Improving dementia care for our patients is a national and local priority for next year and is likely to continue to be a high priority for many years to come.  At any one time 1:5 of our older patients have some kind of dementia diagnosis, ranging from mild confusion to end stage dementia.

 

We want to raise £31,000 to enhance services to dementia patients.  We are currently looking at providing a day room facility on each of our three elderly care wards, to have a dedicated facility for some of our dementia patients to maintain and improve their cognitive and manual function.  In order to support this facility, we would like to be able to buy audio equipment, art materials and other memory enhancing items for the day room facilities.  We would also like to be able to pay for professionals’ services such an activity coordinator to work with our dementia patients in the day room facilities and on the wards to promote ‘recollection’ and enhanced memory recall associated particularly with the music of their younger adult life.  These techniques have shown huge benefits to dementia patients elsewhere in the health service.
