My story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Since 2008 Cairdeas has been actively involved in the Palliative Care Unit at Makerere University and Mulago Hospital in Kampala. We have enabled Dr Mhoira Leng in her role as Head of the Unit and helped to supported others working there.

The work involves considerable travel within the city, not only to get to the university and hospital, but also to visit patients and deliver teaching sessions at other locations within Kampala, and to work with government and NGOs involved in health care. Occasionally it is also necessary to visit patients in rural communities. Unfortunately the roads in Uganda are in a notoriously bad condition, so it’s essential to have a reliable 4-wheel drive vehicle for use by the staff of the Palliative Care Unit to carry out their work safely.

Our current vehicle is old and becoming unreliable and expensive to maintain, so there is an urgent need to replace it. The best option is to buy a reconditioned car –  such as a Toyota RAV-4 previously used in Japan, but new to the harsh conditions of Africa – which typically cost about £4500. Any surplus will be used to maintain the car in a reliable and safe condition.
