So why did we decide on Brake as our chosen charity? Brake is the road safety charity who do phenomenal campaigning to make our roads safer, and also care for the victims and bereaved families who have suffered injury or loss of a loved one through road traffic accidents.
My name is Maureen and I had never heard of Brake until the day I was given news that would change my life forever. Police came to my place of work to inform me my beautiful boy Conor had been killed. He was 16 years of age, at college and also had a part-time job as a milk boy so he could earn some extra money and gain even more independence in life. The accident happened whilst he was delivering milk to a customer.
Those first days were a blur, but I was given a folder by the Family Liaison Officer which gave a step by step guide of what to expect in the coming days, weeks and months ahead. I found it so useful and had presumed it was formulated by the emergency services. This folder is acutally produced by Brake and was my bible for those first weeks. The charity also gave me someone to talk to when I couldn't share my feelings with anyone too close to me.
What I am most grateful for is the advice, reading materials and workbooks they have given to my 8 year daughter, Eilidh. She misses her big brother so much and has found it difficult to express her feelings of grief and loss. I didn't know how to deal with her grief and Brake has giving me a lifeline to assist in Eilidh's healing..
