I DID IT!!! July 10th was my 69th birthday! But due to a very adverse weather forecast from Tuesday 5th July and on past the weekend of my birthday, I completed the challenge on Monday 4th July! I cycled from Castell Coch (Red Castle) near Cardiff, via Pontypridd and the Rhondda, over the Celtic Trail (High Level Route), to my home near Neath. I started out at 10.30 am and arrived home, tired but happy, at 7.00 pm. All told, I completed 37.4 miles of very strenuous cycling, at an average moving speed of 6.3 mph The route uses mainly forest roads and single tracks some of which are high and exposed and it has several steep gradients and rough surfaces in parts. The highest point reached was around 2,000 feet. I enjoyed the big ascents and spectacular views of reservoirs and the Black Mountains, downhill was definitely more fun than uphill though! I have Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease and all sponsorship raised will go to CMT United Kingdom which is the support charity for those affected by the condition.
CMT, or Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, is the most common inherited nerve disorder, affecting over 20,000 people in the UK. It begins in childhood with irreversible progressive weakening, loss of muscle and loss of sensation in the lower legs, then the hands. It can go on to affect breathing, swallowing and speech, and is frequently accompanied by fatigue and neuropathic pain. As someone with CMT, for me the most difficult effects of the condition are the day-to-day ones: a “characteristic” gait, slight difficulty balancing, tripping over kerbs, muscle cramps.
