Next week I will be setting off to cycle from Land's End to John O'Groats, then across Orkney and up to the north of Shetland (with some help from a ferry!). In total cycling over 1000 miles in 16 days. (It seemed like a good idea a couple of months ago, with forecasts of a warm, dry summer!!!)
In order to give myself enough motivation to get back on my saddle each morning I'm aiming to raise £1 a mile, which will enable Ripple Africa to supply 4 bicycle ambulances to villages in Malawi. Having spent my final year at uni researching access to health care in developing countries and designing a low cost ambulance, I'm convinced this is a very deserving cause. Every day hundreds, if not thousands, of people die in Africa, particularly during childbirth, simply because they have no transport to access very basic health care. Bicycle ambulances are a low cost, low tech solution that can, and do, make a dramatic difference.
