TLC (Terry, Lynne & Christine) had a wonderful time taking part in the Olney Pancake Race. We had intended to jog or power-walk the course, but we all ended up running as we were carried away by the roar of the crowd, the pull of the rest of the pack and the hope of catching up with Blue Peter presenter Joel. Joel was running in character dressed in a long, blonde wig, Blue Peter apron and scarf...plus pink lipstick. The race is due to be screened on Blue Peter next Wednesday (24 February).
We have added 10 photographs, which we hope will give you a flavour of the event from before the start to the finish line.
Many, many thanks to everyone who has sponsored us. Including gift-aid, we hope to raise over £500 for the Food Bank.
=============================================================================
TLC (Terry, Lynne and Christine) have registered to take part in The Olney Pancake Race . . you will note we say ‘take part in’ as unfortunately at our ages we’re passed the running stage! However, Terry is up for the challenge and plans to go at a jog, whilst Lynne and Christine power-walk in her wake.
The Olney Pancake Race, dating back more than 500 years, will be held on Shrove Tuesday 16 February at 11:55am. The course is 415 yards long and is run from the Market Place to the Parish Church. Participants, housewives or young ladies of the town, must have lived in Olney for at least 3 months and be at least 18 years old.
TLC will be wearing the traditional costume of a housewife, including a skirt, apron and head covering (no sniggering at our costumes please). We must carry a frying pan containing a home cooked pancake. The starter first tells the runners to ‘toss your pancakes’ and then starts the race. The winner, on crossing the line, must toss her pancake and she is then greeted by the verger with the traditional kiss of peace. Everyone is invited to attend the Shriving Service in the church.
TLC hope to have a fun and enjoyable experience taking part in this historical and traditional event and we hope to raise lots of money for our chosen charity The Food Bank (Reg Charity 1084287)
The Food Bank is a local charity who provide emergency food parcels to families and individuals who hit a short term crisis, filling the gap of days or sometimes weeks before the professional care services can come into play.
