My son Max
24 Hour 3 Peaks Challenge for the Perthes Association
The aim is to climb the 3 highest peaks in Scotland - Ben Nevis (1,343m), England – Scafell Pike (978m) and Wales – Mount Snowdon (1,085m) in under 24 hours
To make it even more worthwhile (other than the sense of personal achievement) we would be extremely grateful for your sponsorship for the Perthes Association!!
This charity is close to my heart as it has helped me personally when my son Max was diagnosed with a potentially crippling hip condition called "Perthes Disease". I am trying to raise sponsorship money so I can make a donation to the Perthes Association to thank them for their kind loan of an oversized buggy and advice provided in our time of need. Hopefully we will get enough funds to enable them to buy at least another buggy to help other families
Our story - Max was diagnosed with Perthes in his left hip, at the age of 4. He had an opening wedge osteotomy, and was fitted into broomstick plaster for 8 weeks. His plasters came off just before he started school, which he did in a wheelchair.
Max had a further operation to remove the metal pins that were originally put in, and we had to restrain activities in terms of no running and jumping, easier said than done for a little boy who was very active before his diagnosis. He was reliant on his wheelchair for over a year, for day to day life at school, in order to keep the weight off his hip.
It has been hard constantly having to tell Max not to do the things he naturally wants to. It was a long journey and the Perthes Association have helped with the loan of a larger buggy to aid our day to day lives, and also with the provision of information about this disease.
Fortunately Max's bones have re-grown in virtually the shape they should and now his bones have hardened he can resume normal life as a 6 year old. Perthes doesn't always churn out success stories, and the charity needs our help to assist others
