This is one of the most amazing charities in that it helps both animals and people. The Brooke helps over 700,000 working equines every year which in turn helps over 3 million people who depend upon them for their livelihoods. The Brooke's approach is not to stick a plaster on a wound, or to rescue a fluffy-wuffy animal and put him in a lovely sanctuary for the rest of his life, only for another poor soul to take his place. Instead, the Brooke recognises that these animals are essential to the survival of their human owners and assists in ensuring that the need for animal welfare is recognised and applied. Indeed, a happy and healthy animal can work harder and thus earn his owner more money.

The animals
The Brooke reaches over 700,000 working horses, donkeys and mules each year. The work these animals do is vital to so many people living in poverty in the developing world.
However, millions of horses, donkeys and mules are suffering right now, in an almost indescribable way. They endure backbreaking work as they are often overloaded, as they haul goods and people to help their poor owners eke out a living.
In blistering heat or unbearable cold they are put to work in vast brick kiln factories, sprawling urban slums, chaotic city streets, remote villages and unforgiving terrain.
Yet, the exhaustion, dehydration, malnutrition, disease and painful injuries these poor, loyal animals suffer are mostly preventable. The Brooke is committed to measurably improving the lives of 2 million suffering horses, donkeys and mules who need our help most in the world. We are determined to make sure that these animals have a better life now through free veterinary treatment – and a happier future through training their owners to help their own animals and research to reveal the best solutions for animal suffering.
The people
We estimate that the 700,000 animals the Brooke helps every year support as many as three million people. And every one of these people has their own story about why their animal is so important to them.
A key factor in any animal's health is how it is cared for by humans - and that's why working with and training people is so core to our work.
