In Jan 2010 I'm planning to brave 3 live volcanoes, think molten lava & ash and rocks erupting from one of them daily, + altitude, 13000ft & bandits (or banditos... only apparently that makes them sound cute & they're not really) in order to raise money for educating children in Guatemala.
Some of you may be wondering why I'm supporting this particular charity. A few years ago, in Laos, some friends & I spent a few days with a 15 yr old boy, Home, who had spent a couple of years at school in Vientienne, but had been called home to his tiny village to work to support his family. He was desperate to continue his education but unfortunately it wasn't an option because he couldn't afford to pay for it, let alone support his aging parents & grandmother as well. He was clearly frustrated knowing he'd have to spend the rest of his life working in that guesthouse in the village.
That was one of many experiences that made me remember how lucky I am to have the option to do almost anything I want with my life. After that trip I really wanted to find a way to help provide education for kids like Home, however couldn't find quite the right charity to help at the time
Fast forward 3 years & I now have a housemate who works for just such a charity. And conveniently, Amy is organising this trip to Guatemala to raise money to help house, clothe & educate children in Guatemala.
So I figure it's about time I did something more than just donate a few pounds here & there. I'd love it if you could help me raise my £2000 target, which will be used to help get some of the poorest children in Guatemala off the streets & into the classroom in order to help break the poverty cycle.
