My story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I have started my new fundraising page for a new challenge to raise vital funds for Spinal Research and The Nicholls Foundation. After the Marathon I decided to tackle something in 2013. It will be a bike ride covering 400 miles of England- using the Handbike and the ReWalk suit. I will stop at schools and organisations to talk about my story. (the accident and how I rebuilt my life including the Marathon) The Marathon took 17 days and raised a massive £210,000 for Spinal Research. I can not thank everyone enough for such kind support- donations, walking with me, helping me in anyway and all the lovely messages.
My next challenge is in memory of a very special young woman I was lucky to know. She suffered a similar injury to me in 2010 and contacted me via my website. I visited her in hospital and we became friends. Sadly Catherine Kouam lost her life on 26th August 2012 due to complications. She will be missed by so many and I want to do this bike ride in memory of her, and know she would love to have seen find a cure for spinal injuries. I am supporting Spinal Research and The Nicholls Foundation.
I was injured in an eventing accident in 2007. I have a T4 spinal cord injury which means I am paralysed from the chest down. During my time in hospital I saw many people who had had their lives turned upside down - some who are unable to breath without the use of a ventilator. I have been very lucky to have a lot of support from family and friends helping me deal with this catastophic injury- some don't have this support.
Spinal cord injuries doesn't just mean you can't walk any more- but can also effect sensation, bowel and bladder function, circulation, temperature regulation, sexual function, bone density. It is a lot to deal with when you are injured and can lead to depression as well.
A spinal injury can happen to anyone at anytime in a split second- a cure must be found!
Spinal Research and The Nicholls Foundation are getting closer to finding a cure and need vital funds- this is why I walked the London Marathon.WE NEED TO RAISE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE to help this happen.
I am using a handbike which is seriously hard work, unlike cycling I can not use my body weight and leg muscles are a lot stronger than arms.
Every donation helps- I appreciate every penny we can raise. The jusgiving donations go to Spinal Research, all the other money we raise is split between SR and Nicholls Foundation. If you would like to donate to the Nicholls Foundation please send a cheque to: The Chestnuts, Eye Kettleby, Melton Mowbray, Leics LE14 2TD
