Story

Why am I taking part in this event...

On January 13 this year I was 31 weeks pregnant and looking forward to the birth of my first baby when I was suddenly hit with agonising chest pain. I was rushed to A and E where it was discovered that I needed immediate emergency heart surgery to save my life.

I was diagnosed with an aortic dissection, which is a tear in the wall of the aorta, the body’s main artery. This is a dangerous condition and usually fatal if not treated quickly. An emergency team was assembled at Papworth and included specialists from anaesthesia and heart surgery from Papworth Hospital and obstetrics and neonatal paediatrics from Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Emily was delivered by C section and just twenty minutes later I was undergoing major open heart surgery to replace my arotic valve

Words can’t describe how grateful I am to Papworth hospital, Mr Nashef (surgeon) and his team for saving my life! Without them I would not have survived. Emily was born at Papworth and on my Dad’s 65 Birthday – the worst and best present a daughter can give her Dad, his daughter with a life threatening heart condition and a new granddaughter!

The day of the event will also be very special to me for another reason - my Auntie Jackie sadly passed away on this day three years ago. She was a regular patient at Papworth hopsital and always said how brilliant they were to her.

I am taking part in this event as part of World Heart Day to raise money for Papworth to purchase a new cardiopulmonary bypass machine (CBM). The CBM becomes the hearts and lungs of almost all the patients who undergo surgery at Papworth Hospital.

I know it doesn't sound like I am running far but cut me a bit of slack I have had open heart surgery!
