My story
This page is dedicated to the memory of our great friend and colleague Gary Openshaw who worked for Network Rail for many years, most recently as Area General Manager for LNW Central area, based in Manchester. Gary passed away on 29th May 2011, aged 44, after a brave fight against cancer. His death was a great shock to everyone at Network Rail and we all miss him terribly still. Gary was one of those rare people who was able to inspire others by his personality and by his example and all of us who worked with him or for him felt privileged to have done so. He is remembered fondly by everyone at Network Rail particularly for his unique motivational presentations and his personal motto "seize the day".
Gary's many friends in the railway industry wanted to hold a fundraising event to commemorate the first anniversary of his death and Gary's wife Lisa and his children Olivia and Marcus have given their backing to our plans. Our aim is to complete the coast to coast walk, from St Bees on the Cumbrian Coast across the country to Robin Hoods bay on the East Coast. We intend to cover the route in relays with teams made up of people from across our industry who worked with Gary. We want to raise as much money as we can for a truly worthy cause. Please give generously and if you want to come along and join in one of the days walks just contact one of the LNW team.
