During the summer of 2011, a team consisting of Ben Allon-Smith, Ali Craig, Harvey Cullis, and Chris Lehrter, will be undertaking the huge challenge of cycling from our school in Cranleigh, Surrey to Rome, Italy. As well as cycling a phenomenal distance of 1300 miles, we will be negotiating several mountain passes through the Alps, and overcoming several language barriers along the way, all in the blistering heat of July.

So you may be wondering why we have decided to do this.

For a while now our school has had a particular connection with Kitwe, a remote village in Zambia, through the charity Beyond Ourselves. Two of our teachers have been organising not only fundraising for a new school there (one teacher, Stuart Block, is cycling from Cape Town to London), but also for Cranleigh students to go out and help with its construction. The four of us admire the effort that has been put in to raise money for such a worthy cause, but we also believe that there is much more to be done.

We are cycling 1300 miles to Rome to raise money for the charity Beyond Ourselves, so that they can fund the education of many young people who may otherwise never have such an opportunity. The greatest gift we can give these people is the capability to be successful, and by educating the younger generation we can help communities to support themselves, and to become more prosperous.

We believe that this cycle challenge is the least we do to help, and we hope that you will appreciate the worthiness of our cause. Please give generously :)
