My Mum

Florence Gearon

21st May 1926 - 8th March 2009

Mum was the kindest supporting person anybody could have ever wished to have known. Her love for her family was totally unconditional. Mum always saw the best in anybody.

In 2003 Mums memory started to fail her, the signs at first were slight, not obvious on a daily basis. Things took a turn for the worse when my brother lost his life at the age of 43 in 2004. The effect of this for the whole family was tragic, but for Mum it was unbearable.

From there on Mum went down hill, mini strokes took their toll, and eventually Mum became that poorly that August 23rd 2008 Mum was taken to hospital suffering from another stroke. This date was also her 63rd wedding anniversary. Mum spent 3 suffering weeks in hospital, the stay there was horrendus, to the point where by I started a petition at 10 Downing St asking for more dementia nurses.

Mum became that poorly that both Dad and I knew with all the love and will in the world Mum would not be able to return home, Mum could hardly walk, stand and the offer of 2 hours care within a 24 hr period sealed Mums fate and we hads to put Mum into a nursing home (Boughton Manor, Ollerton, Newark) this is something we really didn't want to do but felt we had no option. It broke my heart as I am adopted and Mum and Dad took me out of a childrens home and to put Mum into a home felt like I was betraying her, however I went daily and helped to care for her there for hours upon end. The stafff at the home were lovely and in time I knew Mum was in a loving place.

In Feb 2009 Mum yet again took a turning for the worse, at this point Mum couldn't walk, talk, couldn't recognise us, she couldn't smile or laugh, eat proper food and it was like watching her revert to a fetus. Unless anybody has ever seen a loved one suffer to the depth of this I can tell you this, it is unbearable maybe worse for the loved ones left behond ...who knows because the sufferer at this point certainly can't tell you.

In this last year I have changed so much about myself, I have gone from a size 22 - 10, I have given up smoking 20 ciggerettes a day, and I have got  fit. This time last year I struggled to walk downstairs. I started going to the gym in January 2009 and startedrunning at the end of September 2009, I have never even done a 5k run let alone run 40 miles, but I am now in training to achieve this on 8th March 2010. This run will be done non stop no breaks unless I need the loo, even then I will be tapping my toes ;p

I am asking anybody ..would you consider supporting me in this. Via sponsering me via this website, come to the Dukeries Leisure Centre on the 8th March and spur me on, put a £1 in my tin. I want to raise as much money as I can for all of those still suffering, for all of those that are struggling caring for their loved ones, and to help not only raise awareness of this terrible diease. If I can raise enough money to pay a scientist for 1 minute of his time to try and find either a cure or halting this then where ever I do will be worth it.

Thank you for taking the time to read this
