As your giving your money to help Macmillan, I think it's only fair I tell you why I'm doing this to help.

In September 1988, I lost my mum to cancer, I was 5 years old. I don't really remember much about her or her death, but from what I've been told by family and friends of the family, my mum was a very caring and loving person who was devoted to her children. Through out the last weeks of her life and after, Macmillan were there to offer their help and support. Helping us to understand what has happened and help us come to terms with her death.

My mum's death played a huge part in my life and made me who I am today. The other person who helped me become who I am today also is my dad.

My dad, John, was an interesting man. He raised 7 children and since my mums death, he did it on his own. He was fairly old fashioned and family orientated. He also knew how to have a good time and enjoy life. My dad took my mums death pretty badly and started drinking, alot! At one stage we lost everything we owned and my dad hit rock bottom. He knew that if things were going to change, he had to do something about it! 11 years ago he gave up drinking completely and never touched a drop again. He started working really hard and got himself back to the old him.

A few years ago my dad started up a business in Spain and I went out to help him, it was a great time! Everything was going well...ish. But all the children had grown up, he was healthy and enjoying life in the sun and everything was good.

In March 2008 my dad was diagnosed with cancer. This brought back loads of old feelings and emotions for me and my family. It hit us all really hard. But this news did not stop my dad. He was brave and courageous. He didn't break down and start drinking, he carried on. Making sure all his children were happy and his loved ones were all ok. He though about everyone else and never once stopped to feel sorry for himself. He was amazing!

On October 30th, my dad passed away.

For the last few days leading to his death, all my brothers and sisters knew what was coming. It was hard and emotionaly draining.

Throughout all of his treatment to the day he died, the people that stood out the most and helped all of us were the Macmillan nurses. They were amazing! If it wasn't for them, I have no idea how we all would have got through this.

I want to raise as much money as I possibly can for Macmillan so they can go on and help out all of the families that have to go through these types of situations. Not only raising money, but also raising awareness of the good they do and that they are there to help you, no matter what it is you need.
