I have been selected to represent Great Britain at the World Transplant Games to be held in Durban, South Africa 28 July-4 August 2013. I have competed in 4 World Games before and have previously been fortunate enough to win 2 BRONZE, 1 SILVER and 1 GOLD medal, of which I am very proud, it also shows that transplantees are more than able to compete at the highest level, but none of this would be possible without the 'gift of life' from a stranger. The website www.wtg2013.com will give you all the information for these prestigious games which are held every two years. The World Transplant Games are one of the largest international sporting events, at the 2011 Games in Goteborg, Sweden, over 1500 athletes from 55 countries took part in 20 sports. As in all the previous 18 World Transplant Games, the Great Britain Team led the medal table.
All participants at the World Games have received a life-saving organ transplant – be it heart, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas or bone marrow. I received a kidney transplant Christmas Eve 2001 after spending a year on dialysis, this was following a quadruple heart bypass in 2000 following 6 heart attacks. In addition to the physical sporting challenge.
The World Games promote the benefits of organ transplantation and highlights the need for organ donation.
As a member of the Great Britain team I am required to pay for my own transport, accommodation and kit, and to cover the cost of attending the four mandatory team training days at Warwick University. The total cost of my preparation and participation at the Games is £2000 and any contribution you would be able to offer would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to further raise the profile of your organisation there are additional sponsorship opportunities available including branding of the Great Britain Team’s kit, advertising on the Transplant Sport UK website, and coverage on the Transplant Sport UK website and newsletters/Magazine.
The World Transplant Games provides a rare PR opportunity, generating regional, national and international media coverage. Further information on the British and World Transplant Games can be found at www.transplantsport.org.uk and www.wtgf.org. If you would like any more supporting information, you can contact the UK Team Manager, Lynne Holt, on 07900014344 or lholt@home.3b.co.uk
